Growing a Pomegranate plant in a pot is quite easy and it actually grows very well in containers if cared for properly.
1. Choose the Right Pot 🪴
- Use a large pot (at least 14–18 inches deep and wide).
- Make sure the pot has good drainage holes.
- Clay or terracotta pots are best because they prevent waterlogging.
2. Best Soil Mix 🌱
Pomegranate plants like well-draining soil.
Ideal potting mix:
- 40% garden soil
- 30% compost or vermicompost
- 20% sand or perlite
- 10% cocopeat
This mixture keeps the soil nutritious and well drained.
3. Sunlight ☀️
Pomegranate plants love sunlight.
- Give 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
- Keep the pot on a balcony, terrace, or sunny window.
Without enough sun, fruiting may be poor.
4. Watering 💧
- Water 2–3 times per week in summer.
- Water once per week in winter.
- Always let the top 2–3 cm soil dry before watering again.
Too much water can cause root rot.
5. Fertilizer 🌿
Feed the plant every 20–30 days.
Good options:
- Vermicompost
- Cow dung manure
- Banana peel fertilizer
- Mustard cake liquid fertilizer
This helps the plant flower and produce fruits.
6. Pruning ✂️
- Remove dead or weak branches.
- Keep 3–5 main branches for a strong structure.
- Prune lightly after the fruiting season.
Pruning helps improve airflow and fruit production.
7. Pest Control 🐛
Common pests:
- Aphids
- Mealybugs
- Whiteflies
Use:
- Neem oil spray (once every 10–15 days)
- Soap water spray if pests appear
