Rambutan Healthy Fruit Plant

Rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum) from seed in a pot is possible, especially in warm climates like eastern India. However, rambutan is a tropical tree and needs specific care to grow well in containers.

1. Preparing the Seed

1. Take a fresh rambutan fruit.
2. Remove the seed and wash off all fruit flesh.
3. Plant the seed immediately (rambutan seeds lose viability in a few days).

Tip: Do not dry the seed.

2. Pot Selection

• Start with a 20–25 cm (8–10 inch) pot with drainage holes.
• As the plant grows, move it to a larger pot (40–50 cm).

Good pots:

• Clay pots
• Grow bags
• Plastic pots with drainage

3. Soil Mix

Rambutan likes rich, well-draining soil.

Best potting mix:

• 40% garden soil
• 30% compost or vermicompost
• 20% cocopeat
• 10% sand or perlite

This mix keeps soil moist but not waterlogged.

4. Planting the Seed

1. Fill the pot with the soil mix.
2. Plant the seed 2–3 cm deep.
3. Water lightly.
4. Keep the pot in warm, partially shaded area.

⏱ Germination: 10–21 days.

5. Sunlight

• Young plants prefer partial shade.
• After 3–4 months give 4–6 hours of sunlight daily.

Avoid strong afternoon sun in very hot weather.
