Cluster fig / Gular (Ficus racemosa) is a hardy tropical–subtropical fig tree valued for its fruits, shade, and traditional uses.
🌱 Growing Conditions
Climate
- Tropical to warm subtropical
- Ideal temperature: 20–35 °C
- Tolerates heat and short dry periods once established
- Sensitive to heavy frost when young
Sunlight
- Full sun is best (6–8 hours daily)
- Can tolerate light partial shade, but fruiting improves in full sun
Soil
- Grows in most soils: sandy, loamy, or clay
- Best in well-drained soil
- pH: slightly acidic to neutral (6.0–7.5)
🌿 Planting
- Choose an open location (tree grows large with spreading roots).
- Dig a pit about 2× the size of the root ball.
- Mix native soil with compost or well-rotted manure.
- Plant at the same depth as in the nursery bag.
- Water thoroughly after planting.
⚠️ Avoid planting too close to buildings, walls, or pipelines.
💧 Watering
- Young plants (first 1–2 years):
- Water 2–3 times per week in summer
- Once a week in cooler months
- Mature trees:
- Drought tolerant
- Water during long dry spells or fruiting stage
- Avoid waterlogging
🌾 Fertilizing
- Not a heavy feeder
- Apply organic compost or cow dung manure:
- Once at the start of monsoon
- Once after fruiting
- Optional: a balanced NPK (10-10-10) once a year for faster growth
✂️ Pruning
- Minimal pruning needed
- Remove:
- Dead or diseased branches
- Low or crossing branches
- Best time: late winter or after fruiting
🐛 Pests & Diseases
Generally pest-resistant, but may occasionally face:
- Mealybugs / scale insects → neem oil spray
- Leaf spots / fungal issues → improve airflow, avoid overhead watering
🌸 Flowering & Fruiting
- Fruits grow in clusters directly on the trunk and large branches
- Starts fruiting in 4–6 years (earlier if grown from cuttings)
- Fruits are edible when ripe (usually red or maroon)
