Purslane (Portulaca oleracea) — also called “Luni bhaji,” “Kulfa,” or “Verdolaga” — is a hardy, succulent-like plant that thrives with minimal care. It’s both ornamental and edible, rich in omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin C. 🌿
🌞 Light
- Full sun (6–8 hours daily) is essential — the more sun, the more flowers and thicker leaves.
- Indoors, keep it by a south-facing window or under a grow light.
💡 Purslane becomes leggy and weak if it doesn’t get enough light.
🌡️ Temperature
- Thrives in warm conditions (20–35 °C / 68–95 °F).
- It’s not frost-tolerant — move it indoors or cover it if temperatures drop below 10 °C (50 °F).
💧 Watering
- Purslane is drought-tolerant and stores water in its leaves.
- Water only when the soil is completely dry.
- In hot weather: 1–2 times per week.
- In cooler or indoor conditions: every 7–10 days.
- Avoid overwatering — soggy soil causes root rot.
✅ Tip: It’s safer to underwater than overwater.
🌱 Soil
- Grows best in well-draining sandy or loamy soil.
- Use a cactus or succulent mix or prepare your own:
- 2 parts garden soil
- 1 part sand or perlite
- 1 part compost
pH range: 6.0–7.5 (neutral to slightly acidic)
🌼 Fertilizer
- Purslane doesn’t need much feeding.
- You can add compost once a month or a diluted liquid fertilizer (half strength) during the growing season (spring–summer).
- Avoid excess nitrogen — it can make the plant grow too leafy with fewer flowers.
🌸 Flowering (for ornamental types)
- Flowers bloom in bright sunlight and often close at night or on cloudy days.
- Regular deadheading (removing spent blooms) encourages more flowers.
✂️ Pruning
- Pinch back stems to keep the plant compact and bushy.
- Trim any leggy or overgrown parts regularly.
🌾 Propagation
Super easy to grow more plants!
- From cuttings:
- Cut a 3–4 inch (7–10 cm) healthy stem.
- Let it dry for a day, then place in moist soil.
- Roots form within a week.
- From seeds:
- Sprinkle seeds on the surface of moist soil.
- Don’t bury them deeply — they need light to germinate.
- Keep warm and slightly moist until seedlings appear (~7–10 days).
