The Giloy plant (Tinospora cordifolia), also known as Guduchi or Amrita, is a highly valued Ayurvedic vine. It’s easy to grow both outdoors and indoors (with sunlight), and it’s quite hardy once established. 🌿
🌞 Light Requirements
- Full to partial sunlight — Giloy loves the sun!
- Place it where it gets at least 4–6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
- If growing indoors, keep it near a south or west-facing window or under a bright grow light.
- It can tolerate partial shade, but growth slows and leaves turn pale in low light.
🌡️ Temperature & Climate
- Thrives best in warm, tropical to subtropical climates.
- Ideal temperature: 25–35°C (77–95°F).
- It doesn’t like frost or cold drafts, so if you live in a cooler region, bring it indoors during winter.
🌱 Soil Requirements
- Prefers well-draining soil — sandy loam or regular garden soil mixed with compost and sand.
- Soil mix recipe (for pots):
- 1 part garden soil
- 1 part cocopeat or sand
- 1 part organic compost or vermicompost
💡 Tip: Good drainage is key — waterlogging can rot the roots.
💧 Watering
- Keep soil slightly moist but never soggy.
- Water 2–3 times a week in summer; reduce in monsoon and winter.
- Always check the top 1–2 inches of soil — if it’s dry, water; if damp, wait.
- Avoid overwatering — root rot is common.
🪴 Container & Support
- Use a large pot (12–18 inches deep) with drainage holes.
- Giloy is a climbing vine, so provide a strong trellis, bamboo stick, or wall support.
- It can also climb on trees naturally — many people plant it near neem or mango trees.
🌼 Fertilizer
- Feed with organic compost or vermicompost every 45–60 days during the growing season (spring to autumn).
- You can also spray a mild seaweed or organic liquid fertilizer once a month.
- Avoid chemical fertilizers — they can harm the plant’s medicinal quality.
✂️ Pruning & Maintenance
- Trim long or dry vines regularly to promote new growth.
- Prune after the monsoon or after harvesting stems.
- Removing yellow or damaged leaves keeps it healthy.
🌿 Propagation
- Easiest method: Stem cuttings
- Take a 6–8 inch cutting with 2–3 nodes from a healthy vine.
- Let it dry for a few hours.
- Plant it in moist soil or water until roots form (about 10–15 days).
- Transplant to a bigger pot or ground once established.
