Caring for a walnut tree (Akhrot / Juglans regia) is quite rewarding — these trees can live for decades and provide delicious nuts as well as valuable shade and timber. However, they do need proper care, especially in the early years, to establish strong growth and resist pests.
🌱 1. Choosing the Right Walnut Type
There are two main types:
- English/Persian Walnut (Juglans regia) — common in India (Kashmir, Himachal, Uttarakhand); produces thin-shelled nuts.
- Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) — hardy, but thicker shells and slightly different taste; mainly used for timber.
If you’re in northern or hilly regions, Juglans regia is best. In warmer plains, select heat-tolerant grafted varieties.

- Stop watering before the monsoon and during dormancy (winter).

Walnut trees are heavy feeders.
For young trees (1–5 years):

For mature trees (6+ years):
- Increase manure to 20–30 kg per tree annually.

- Starts flowering after 4–8 years (grafted plants may fruit earlier).
