Caring for a walnut tree (Akhrot / Juglans regia) is quite rewarding — these trees can live for decades and provide delicious nuts as well as valuable shade and timber. However, they do need proper care, especially in the early years, to establish strong growth and resist pests.

There are two main types:

  • English/Persian Walnut (Juglans regia) — common in India (Kashmir, Himachal, Uttarakhand); produces thin-shelled nuts.
  • Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) — hardy, but thicker shells and slightly different taste; mainly used for timber.

If you’re in northern or hilly regions, Juglans regia is best. In warmer plains, select heat-tolerant grafted varieties.

🌤️ 2. Ideal Growing Conditions

Factor Requirement
Sunlight Full sun (at least 6–8 hours daily)
Temperature Prefers 10–25°C, tolerates mild frost but young plants need protection
Soil Deep, fertile, well-drained loamy soil with pH 6–7.5
Altitude Grows best at 1200–2000 m above sea level (hill areas)

Avoid waterlogged or clay-heavy soils — walnuts hate “wet feet”.

💧 3. Watering

  • Keep soil moist but not soggy, especially for young trees.
  • 1–2 years old plants: Water 2–3 times per week (depending on weather).
  • Mature trees: Deep watering every 10–15 days during dry seasons.
  • Stop watering before the monsoon and during dormancy (winter).

💡 Tip: Use mulch (dry leaves, straw, cocopeat) around the base to retain moisture.

🌿 4. Fertilizing

Walnut trees are heavy feeders.

For young trees (1–5 years):

  • Apply well-rotted cow manure or compost (5–10 kg) twice a year — spring and post-monsoon.
  • Use balanced NPK fertilizer (10:10:10 or 20:20:20) at half strength every 2–3 months.

For mature trees (6+ years):

  • Increase manure to 20–30 kg per tree annually.
  • Add urea (100–200 g) + superphosphate (200–400 g) + muriate of potash (100–150 g) split across growing season (Feb–June).

✂️ 5. Pruning

  • Prune in late winter (Feb–Mar) before new shoots emerge.
  • Remove:
    • Dead, diseased, or crossing branches.
    • Suckers from base.
    • Weak or crowded growth inside canopy.
  • Keep 3–5 strong main branches to form an open shape.

🌼 6. Flowering & Fruiting

  • Starts flowering after 4–8 years (grafted plants may fruit earlier).
  • Flowers appear in spring; fruits mature in autumn (Oct–Nov).
  • Fruits fall when outer green husk splits — harvest and sun-dry nuts for 5–7 days.
