The Boxer Cactus (often referring to a Gymnocalycium mihanovichii, Ferocactus, or a similar small barrel-type cactus) is a low-maintenance indoor plant perfect for beginners.
🌞 Light
- Needs bright, indirect sunlight.
Place it near a south- or west-facing window where it gets several hours of filtered sun daily. - Avoid harsh direct midday sunlight — it can scorch the cactus.
- If your cactus starts leaning toward the light, rotate the pot every few weeks.
💧 Water
- Water sparingly — overwatering is the #1 cause of cactus death indoors.
- Spring–Summer (growing season): Water every 2–3 weeks when the soil is completely dry.
- Fall–Winter (resting season): Water once a month or less.
- Always drain excess water; never let it sit in a saucer.
🪴 Soil
- Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix.
- You can make your own by mixing:
- 2 parts potting soil
- 1 part perlite or coarse sand
- 1 part small gravel or pumice
🌡️ Temperature & Humidity
- Ideal indoor temperature: 65–85°F (18–29°C).
- Avoid temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
- Prefers low humidity — keep it away from humidifiers or bathrooms.
🌸 Fertilizer
- During spring and summer, feed once a month with a diluted cactus fertilizer (half-strength).
- No need to fertilize in fall and winter.
🪴 Potting
- Choose a terracotta or clay pot with drainage holes.
- Repot every 2–3 years in spring, or when roots outgrow the pot.
