The Chlorophytum comosum, commonly known as the spider plant, is one of the easiest and most rewarding houseplants to grow indoors. It’s hardy, adaptable, and great for beginners.

  • Scientific name: Chlorophytum comosum
  • Common names: Spider plant, airplane plant, ribbon plant
  • Native to: South Africa
  • Lifespan: Several years (long-lived perennial)
  • Toxicity: Non-toxic to pets (cat- and dog-friendly!)

☀️ Light Requirements

  • Ideal: Bright, indirect sunlight.
  • Avoid: Direct afternoon sun (it can scorch the leaves).
  • Low light: Tolerates low light but grows more slowly and may lose variegation.

💡 Tip: Near an east- or north-facing window is perfect.

💧 Watering

  • When to water: When the top 1 inch (2–3 cm) of soil feels dry.
  • Frequency: About once a week in summer; less in winter.
  • Avoid: Overwatering—spider plants hate soggy soil. Yellow tips usually mean too much water.

💧 Trick: Use room-temperature water and let tap water sit overnight if your water is high in fluoride or chlorine (spider plants are sensitive to those).

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

  • Temperature: 18–27°C (65–80°F) is ideal.
  • Minimum: 10°C (50°F).
  • Humidity: Average home humidity is fine, but mist occasionally in dry climates.

🌱 Soil & Potting

  • Soil: Well-draining potting mix (e.g., regular houseplant mix + perlite or sand).
  • Pot: Use one with drainage holes.
  • Repotting: Every 1–2 years, when roots start poking through the bottom.

🌸 Feeding

  • Fertilizer: Balanced liquid fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10) every 2–4 weeks during spring and summer.
  • Skip feeding: In winter.

✂️ Pruning & Maintenance

  • Remove brown or yellow leaves with clean scissors.
  • Cut off spent flower stems after blooming.
  • Wipe leaves occasionally to remove dust.

🌼 Propagation (Making New Plants!)

Spider plants produce “babies” or pups (small plantlets on stems).

To propagate:

  1. Wait until pups develop small roots.
  2. Cut them off from the mother plant.
  3. Root in water or moist soil.
  4. Transfer to a pot once roots are ~2 inches long.

They root very easily — it’s fun and fast!
