🌿 Calathea Medallion – How to Grow

Calathea Medallion (Goeppertia roseopicta ‘Medallion’) is a beautiful tropical foliage plant with large, round leaves. It grows very well in pots indoors or in a shaded balcony/nursery area.

☀️ Light

• Give bright, indirect light.
• Avoid direct afternoon sunlight—it can burn the leaves.
• A little gentle morning sunlight is usually fine.
• Too little light can make growth slower and leaves less attractive.

💧 Watering

• Keep the soil slightly and consistently moist, but never waterlogged.
• Water when the top 1–2 cm of soil feels slightly dry.
• During hot weather, it may need watering more frequently.
• Reduce watering during cooler periods.
• Make sure the pot has good drainage.

Tip: Calatheas can be sensitive to hard or heavily chlorinated water. Rainwater, filtered water, or water that has been allowed to sit can be better if you notice brown leaf edges.

🌱 Best Potting Mix

Use a loose, airy mix such as:

• 40% cocopeat
• 25% coco chips or orchid bark
• 20% compost/vermicompost
• 15% perlite or coarse sand

The goal is a mix that holds some moisture while allowing excess water to drain quickly.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

Calathea Medallion prefers warm and humid conditions.

• Ideal temperature: roughly 18–30°C
• Keep away from cold drafts and strong AC airflow.
• Aim for 50–70%+ humidity if possible.
• Grouping plants together can naturally increase humidity.

🌿 Fertilizer

During active growth, feed about once every 3–4 weeks with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer.

Don’t over-fertilize—the roots are relatively sensitive.

🪴 Repotting

Repot when:

• Roots are filling the pot.
• Water runs through the pot extremely quickly.
• Growth has slowed considerably.

Move to a pot only 2–5 cm wider than the existing pot rather than using a very large pot.

✂️ Leaf Care

• Remove completely yellow or badly damaged leaves from the base.
• Wipe dusty leaves gently with a soft, damp cloth.
• Don’t use leaf-shine products.
• Brown edges usually indicate low humidity, inconsistent watering, salt buildup, or unsuitable water.

🌱 Propagation

Calathea Medallion is generally propagated by division.

When repotting:

1. Remove the plant carefully.
2. Separate natural clumps with their roots attached.
3. Plant each division in a small pot.
4. Keep them warm, humid and in bright indirect light.
5. Avoid heavy fertilizer until new growth appears.
