Syzygium nursery plant (Syzygium/Eugenia) in a pot – Care Guide

Syzygium is a popular evergreen plant used for hedges, topiary, bonsai-style shaping, and ornamental pots. Common varieties include Syzygium myrtifolium and other Syzygium species.

1. Pot & Soil

Pot size

• Small plant (20–40 cm): 8–10 inch pot
• Growing plant (60–100 cm): 12–16 inch pot
• Mature topiary: 18–24 inch pot

Soil mix (well-draining)

• 40% garden soil
• 30% compost/vermicompost
• 20% cocopeat
• 10% sand/perlite

Make sure the pot has drainage holes. Syzygium does not like standing water.

2. Sunlight

• Best: 4–6 hours direct sunlight daily
• Morning sun is ideal
• Can tolerate partial shade, but growth becomes slower and leaves may become less dense.

For a bushy topiary:

• Give maximum sunlight
• Rotate the pot every 1–2 weeks for even growth

3. Watering

• Water when the top 2–3 cm soil feels dry
• Summer: usually 2–4 times/week depending on heat
• Winter: reduce watering
• Monsoon: avoid excess water

Symptoms:

• Yellow leaves + wet soil → overwatering
• Dry/crispy leaves → underwatering or too much heat

4. Fertilizer Schedule

For healthy green growth:

Every 30–45 days

• Vermicompost: 2–3 handfuls
• OR balanced NPK (10-10-10 / 19-19-19): low dose

For thick leaves and branching:

• Use nitrogen-rich fertilizer during active growth

Avoid heavy fertilizer in winter.
