Mammillaria Plumosa (Feather Cactus) – Grow & Care Guide

Mammillaria Plumosa, commonly known as the Feather Cactus, is a beautiful, slow-growing cactus covered with soft, white, feather-like spines. It is one of the easiest cacti to grow and is ideal for windowsills, balconies, and succulent collections.

Sunlight

• Requires 4–6 hours of bright sunlight daily.
• Prefers morning sunlight with bright indirect light during hot afternoons.
• Keep in the sunniest indoor window if grown indoors.

Watering

• Water only when the soil is completely dry.
• During summer: Water every 10–15 days (depending on temperature).
• During winter: Water every 3–4 weeks.
• Avoid overwatering, as it can cause root rot.

Soil

Use a fast-draining cactus potting mix containing:

• 50% coarse sand or perlite
• 30% garden soil
• 20% compost or coco peat

Ensure the pot has drainage holes.

Temperature

• Ideal temperature: 18–30°C
• Protect from frost and temperatures below 5°C.
• Keep in a dry, well-ventilated location during the monsoon.

Fertilizer

• Feed once every 30–45 days during spring and summer.
• Use a diluted cactus or succulent fertilizer.
• Do not fertilize during winter.

Repotting

• Repot every 2–3 years or when the plant outgrows its pot.
• Choose a pot only slightly larger than the current one.

Flowering

• Produces small creamy-white to pale pink flowers arranged in a ring around the top of the cactus.
• Usually blooms in spring to early summer when grown in good light.

Propagation

• Easily propagated by separating offsets (pups).
• Allow the cut surface to dry for 2–3 days before planting in dry cactus soil.
