Growing turmeric (haldi) from a bulb (rhizome) is straightforward if you provide warm temperatures, moisture, and rich soil.
1. Choose a healthy turmeric rhizome
- Select fresh, firm rhizomes with at least 1–2 visible buds (“eyes”).
- Avoid shriveled, moldy, or damaged pieces.
- If the rhizome is large, cut it into sections so each piece has at least one healthy bud. Let the cut pieces dry for 1–2 days before planting.
2. Best time to plant
- In much of India, plant before or at the start of the monsoon (April–June).
- Turmeric grows best in warm weather between 20–35°C.
3. Prepare the soil
Turmeric prefers:
- Loose, well-drained soil
- Plenty of organic matter (compost or well-rotted manure)
- Slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.0–7.5)
Mix garden soil with compost for better growth.
4. Plant the rhizome
- Plant 5–7 cm (2–3 inches) deep.
- Keep the bud facing upward.
- Space plants 30–45 cm apart.
5. Watering
- Water immediately after planting.
- Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
- Reduce watering if there is heavy rain.
6. Sunlight
- Turmeric grows best in partial shade to filtered sunlight.
- It can tolerate morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon sun in very hot climates.
7. Fertilizing
Every 4–6 weeks, add:
- Compost
- Vermicompost
- Well-rotted cow manure
These organic fertilizers work well for home gardens.
8. Care
- Remove weeds regularly.
- Apply mulch (dry leaves or straw) to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Watch for rot if the soil stays soggy.
9. Harvest
- Turmeric is usually ready 8–10 months after planting.
- Harvest when the leaves turn yellow and begin to dry.
- Carefully dig around the plant and lift the rhizomes.
