Growing a Cymbidium orchid from a bulb-like structure (called a pseudobulb) is usually done by division rather than from seed. Here’s how to encourage healthy growth.

1. Choose a healthy pseudobulb

  • Select a firm, green pseudobulb with at least one healthy growing eye (bud).
  • For best results, divide a mature plant so each division has 3–5 pseudobulbs, including at least one with active new growth.

2. Use the right pot

  • Choose a pot with excellent drainage.
  • Cymbidiums prefer being slightly crowded rather than overpotted.

3. Prepare the potting mix

Use a coarse, well-draining orchid mix such as:

  • Medium fir bark or pine bark
  • Perlite
  • Charcoal
  • Coconut chips (optional)

Avoid regular garden soil, which holds too much water.

4. Plant correctly

  • Position the pseudobulbs at the surface of the mix.
  • Cover only the roots—do not bury the pseudobulbs deeply.
  • Place the newest growth facing the center of the pot with room to expand outward.

5. Watering

  • Water thoroughly after planting.
  • Then allow the top of the mix to become slightly dry before watering again.
  • During active growth (spring and summer), water more frequently.
  • Reduce watering somewhat in winter, but don’t let the roots dry out completely.

6. Light

  • Provide bright, indirect light or gentle morning sun.
  • Leaves should be light green. Very dark green leaves often indicate insufficient light.

7. Temperature

Cymbidiums enjoy cooler conditions than many orchids:

  • Day: 18–25°C (64–77°F)
  • Night: 7–13°C (45–55°F) in late summer and autumn helps trigger flower spikes.

8. Fertilizing

  • Feed every 2–4 weeks during active growth with a balanced orchid fertilizer at half strength.
  • Flush the pot with plain water once a month to remove fertilizer salts.

9. Repotting

  • Repot every 2–3 years, ideally after flowering when new roots begin to grow.

How long does it take?

  • New shoots usually appear in a few weeks to a few months, depending on the season.
  • A newly divided plant may take 1–2 years to bloom again while it re-establishes.
