How to plant a spider lily bulb
- Choose the right location
- Full sun to partial shade (4–6 hours of sunlight is ideal).
- Well-drained soil is essential. Bulbs can rot in waterlogged soil.
- Plant at the correct depth
- Dig a hole about 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) deep.
- Place the bulb with the pointed end facing upward.
- In warmer climates, leave the neck of the bulb just above or level with the soil surface.
- Space the bulbs
- Keep bulbs 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) apart so they have room to multiply.
- Water after planting
- Water thoroughly once after planting.
- Keep the soil lightly moist until growth begins.
- Avoid overwatering during dormancy.
Caring for spider lilies
- Sunlight: Full sun gives the best flowering, though afternoon shade is beneficial in very hot regions.
- Water: Water regularly during the growing season. Reduce watering once the foliage dies back.
- Fertilizer: Apply a balanced fertilizer (such as 10-10-10) in early spring and after flowering.
- Mulch: A light layer of mulch helps retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Flowering
- Many spider lilies bloom from late summer to early autumn.
- The flowers often appear before or without leaves, followed by strap-like leaves that grow afterward.
Propagation
- Bulbs naturally produce offsets (“baby bulbs”).
- Divide and replant them every 3–5 years, preferably during the dormant season.
