A variegated Schefflera arboricola ‘Gold Capella’ (often called golden schefflera) is fairly easy to grow if you avoid overwatering.
Best growing conditions
Light
- Keep it in bright, indirect light near an east or north-facing window.
- A little gentle morning sun is fine.
- Avoid harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch leaves.
- Low light makes the yellow variegation fade and causes leggy growth.
Water
- Water only when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry.
- Water deeply until excess drains out.
- Empty the tray/saucer so roots don’t sit in water.
- In winter, water less often.
Soil
- Use loose, well-draining potting mix:
- garden soil + cocopeat + compost + perlite/sand works well
- Pot must have drainage holes.
Temperature & humidity
- Ideal: 18–30°C.
- Protect from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
- Moderate humidity is enough; if your room is very dry, use a pebble tray or keep plants grouped together.
Feeding
- Feed once every 6–8 weeks in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength.
- Don’t overfeed; skip or reduce in winter.
Pruning & repotting
- Pinch tips or trim long stems to make it bushier.
- Prune in spring.
- Repot every 2–3 years, or when roots come out of drainage holes.
- Move up only one pot size.
