The Calathea makoyana (often called the Peacock Plant) is beautiful but a bit fussy—once you understand its needs, it thrives indoors.
🌿 Light
- Prefers bright, indirect light
- Avoid direct sun → it can fade or scorch the patterned leaves
- Can tolerate low light, but growth slows
💧 Watering
- Keep soil consistently moist, not soggy
- Water when the top 1–2 inches feel dry
- Use filtered, distilled, or rainwater if possible
(they’re sensitive to minerals in tap water → brown edges)
🌡️ Temperature & Humidity
- Ideal temperature: 18–26°C (65–80°F)
- Loves high humidity (60%+)
- Mist occasionally
- Use a humidifier or pebble tray
- Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature changes
🌱 Soil
- Use a well-draining, airy mix
- Potting soil + coco peat + perlite works well
- Needs moisture retention without waterlogging
