The Calathea zebrina (often called the zebra plant) is loved for its bold striped leaves—but it’s also a bit picky. If you get the basics right, though, it can thrive indoors 🌿
🌱 Light
- Prefers bright, indirect light
- Avoid direct sunlight → it can scorch the leaves
- Too little light → faded stripes and slow growth
👉 A spot near a window with sheer curtains is ideal.
💧 Watering
- Keep soil consistently moist, not soggy
- Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry
- Use filtered, distilled, or rainwater if possible
(Calatheas are sensitive to tap water chemicals)
⚠️ Signs:
- Brown edges → underwatering or poor water quality
- Yellow leaves → overwatering
🌡️ Temperature & Humidity
- Loves warmth: 18–26°C (65–80°F)
- Needs high humidity (60%+)
💡 Tips:
- Use a humidifier
- Place on a pebble tray
- Mist occasionally (light mist, not soaking)
🌿 Soil & Potting
- Use well-draining, airy soil
- Mix: potting soil + coco peat + perlite
- Pot with drainage holes (very important)
