The Cycas palm (often called sago palm) is a slow-growing, hardy ornamental that looks like a mini palm but is actually a cycad.
🌱 Basic Growing Conditions
☀️ Light
- Prefers bright, indirect sunlight
- Can tolerate some direct morning sun, but avoid harsh afternoon sun (especially in hot regions like West Bengal)
🌡️ Temperature
- Ideal: 20–35°C
- Sensitive to frost—keep protected in winter if temperatures drop
🪴 Soil & Potting
- Needs well-draining soil
- Best mix:
- Garden soil + sand + compost (1:1:1)
- Ensure pot has drainage holes (very important to prevent root rot)
💧 Watering
- Water moderately
- Let soil dry out between watering
- Overwatering is the #1 killer ❗
👉 Tip: In summer, water once every 4–5 days; in winter, reduce to once every 10–15 days.
🌿 Fertilizer
- Feed every 4–6 weeks during growing season (spring & summer)
- Use:
- Balanced liquid fertilizer, or
- Organic compost/vermicompost
✂️ Pruning & Maintenance
- Remove yellow or dead leaves at the base
- Don’t cut healthy green fronds—they grow slowly and take time to replace
🌼 Growth & Repotting
- Very slow-growing
- Repot every 2–3 years
- Likes being slightly root-bound
